Meeting Report 30th March 2021.

MonthlyCompetition review and results:

Judge Norman Marsh.

Martin started the evening by running through details of our future meetings and introducing Norman Marsh who is a member of the very highly rated and successful Dorchester Camera Club. Norman’s pedigree certainly makes him a very capable judge.
His task to sort out the ‘Action/Movement’ and ‘Open’ images was based on them being appropriate to the subject which did affect his final decisions.

In the ‘Action/Movement’ section he concluded that Ian Barrow’s entry ‘I see You’ had great impact from the moment he saw it and it fully complied with the theme and awarded it 1st place and a score of 20 points’ Well done Ian - it’s great to see your wonderful efforts to produce interesting and inspiring images rewarded by winning a well-deserved return to top place.

In 2nd place Peter Owen presented us with another great aircraft shot ‘Polish Mig29’ a stunning capture of this super jet fighter.

Ian Barrow's success continued winning 3rd and 4th places ‘Focussed on Winning’ and ‘Hang on Tight’.

Congratulations to Mike Cook who took 5th place with his ‘Red Arrows’ entry, a lovely shot of four red arrow fighters crossing over the beach at the Weston-Super-Mare Air Display.

The ‘Open’ section was headed by Brian Sweeting with one of my wildlife shots ‘Great Crested Grebes in Springtime’ a very colourful and topical image at the time of the year when our generic and migrant birds start their breeding season. This entry received 20 points.

Andy White had another very successful evening in this section taking 2nd and 3rd with his two very distinctive creative entries ‘After the Ball’ and ‘Hollie Reclining’. After the Ball was a beautifully constructed Venetian style lady sat on a cascading stone staircase.

4th place was awarded to Martin Barber who presented us with his mono rugby entry ‘Getting Steamed Up’.

Ian Barrow took 5th place with his entry ‘Time to Reflect’ which completed a very successful evening for him and a great end to the monthly competition season.

Meeting Report 23rd March 2021.

Martin started the evening, as usual, pointing out to members what we have ahead of us in the next few weeks. Next week we have our last monthly competition of this season, hard to believe! He reminded us that we need to produce a creative or time-lapsed image for the next internal members’ competition before the closing date of April 13th. So get your thinking caps on and let’s make this a special competition. This type of image is doing so well both within our club and in national competitions too.

AV Competition Review

What an enjoyable and well supported meeting this turned out to be with lots of banter and leg pulling. I thought it was one of our best, and that’s not just because I had a good result. That was frankly a big surprise! There were ten entries, all very different and all very entertaining. Martin intends uploading a few if copyright allows? Everyone enjoyed watching the AVs followed by submitting their two favourites. Three of them were awarded joint second place and one was the outright winner.

First place was awarded Brian Sweeting with his entry ‘Canada to Alaska’, which included images of a wonderful holiday celebration of their Golden Wedding anniversary in 2016. The AV story started in Banf, Canada, then images taken during our trip across the Rocky Mountains to Vancouver then cruising to Alaska, visiting many old Gold mining towns along it’s coast.

Joint second, Ken Hocking presented ‘Bridgwater Photographic on Tour’, a lovely funny memory-jerker for the members who shared this short holiday in the North East of England.

Tom Meacham shared second place with ‘My Photo Journey, So Far’. This covered many of his images from the time he joined our club. Most of his images were of his lovely family.

Also in joint second place, Jim Goddard did himself proud with a great entry showing us a recent visit to London accompanied by Jane. It looked like they had a load of fun!

ABC Competition Review

There were over 40 entries which to my knowledge was a record entry. Some of the letters were easier than others to recognise and viewing Members selected their favourite. Graham Treharne came out on top with a view through a break in a rock formation in the mountains in Navada USA which displayed the letter ‘J’. Second place was awarded to Ian Barrow with his woodland scene with a creative touch making one of the trees into the letter ‘X’. Jane Billing’s two entries received joint third. Her entries resulted in more comments than any of the others. Both were in a table top style creating the letters ‘I’ and ‘Y’ using cleverly selected and suitably coloured objects to form the letters . Andy White’s entry was Highly Commended. It was a very artistic image of a globe and interpreted the letter ‘O’.

In all we had a very good evening discussing the merits of each other’s entries with more than a touch of humour.

Next Meeting information; March 30th 2021.

On Tuesday 30th we will welcome Norman Marsh, a new judge to BPS, who will be critiquing and giving the results of our last monthly competition of the 2020/2021 season. The images will depict Print - Action/Movement and Digital – Open.

Meeting Report 16th March 2021.

Penny & Spike Piddock presented us with ‘A Wet Night In’ (Underwater Photography)

One thing is for sure is that we definitely have a hugely varied programme this year. Penny and Spike delighted members with their unusual and very colourful underwater images demonstrating the weird and wonderful in our oceans. Spike explained to members how he and Penny met and both became hooked on snorkelling and deep sea diving. He kicked off their presentation with images taken close to their home along the Dorset coast close to Portland. It was surprising to see such an assortment of very colourful fish and crustaceans in our own waters. It soon became obvious that they have travelled to most locations in the world that have rich coral seas, I really could not keep count of how many visits abroad they have made in their married life.
After a short break Penny took over with her presentation ‘Penny does the splits’ which is her speciality. This involves images taken under water and above the waves and merging them to become a creative image showing what’s going on beneath and above the waves. Penny pointed out that she doesn’t deep dive and all of her shots were taken in shallow water. This was most surprising due to the diverse and very colourful selection of beautiful images we were shown. They both pointed out that many of their images needed a great deal of editing due to the poor light experienced when shooting in deeper water.

Next Meeting information; March 232rd 2021.
ABC & AV competition review and results together with the long awaited ABC competition. Martin pointed out that he had received an entry of 44 in the ABC and 8 AVs. Members: Please use our normal Zoom log in link.

Meeting Report 9th March 2021.

‘Sleepy Robot’ … The Challenge

It’s for certain that Steve and Jen were anything but sleepy when tackling their style of photography with all of its difficulties whilst, at the same time, attempting to be totally original. Twenty-four members, friends and paying guests seemed to be quite shocked to see just how much effort they put in to obtain something out of the ordinary. They started by explaining how they came together with a shared passion for their unique type of photography. In order to produce their creative images they converted their large garage into a studio giving them enough space to store their large collection of homemade props and a complete stage set which they built from scratch to provide images for a friend who was writing a book and needed illustrations.
After a short break they took us through their ballet dancer period of photography. This included the great adventures they experienced in producing images for the Welsh Ballet Company. During a successful interview for the commission, they were told that they would be paid for their efforts which came as a shock to them because they had an ambition to photograph dancers (for no payment) but could not find a local dance troupe that would allow them to do this. This was another brilliant evening’s entertainment that I think will remain in of our memories.

Meeting Report 2nd March 2021.

As always Ken and Keith didn’t disappoint and I’m sure I speak for all members when I say a big thank you to them on your behalf. Their photographic adventures provided an evening of great fun and banter. Their presentation started with some hilarious stories of the troubles they encountered whilst getting to Scotland, especially the story of when Ken forgot he had his Swiss Army knife in his pocket. Their experiences in booking accommodation, hiring cars as well as the sometimes difficult situations they found themselves in when attempting to obtain food and fuel for the car were included. Many years of Scottish travel were included covering all genres of photography. The presentation demonstrated that Scotland and its islands are a beautiful part of the UK.
