Meeting Report 26th January 2021

Monthly Competition review

This month’s competition was judged by Lea Tippett. Our members certainly came up trumps with, what I believe to be, the season’s largest entry. Ken tells me that 80 images were submitted for first-time judge, Lea Tippet, to sort out. Lea was quite worried about judging but soon settled into a good rhythm giving critique as he progressed through the huge entry. One of his pet dislikes was heavy and, what he considered to be, unnecessary vingnetting. He punished them accordingly and frequently pointed out that a tighter crop would have improved many images. The exception to this were a few wildlife entries which he felt needed to show more environment. First up for judging were the digital entries (Open). Lea held back ten images from which he selected his top five as follows: Tom Meacham hit top spot for the second consecutive month with his portrait ‘Isabel’, well done Tom. Second place was awarded to Ken Hocking who manged to spot and photograph a young Roe Deer peering through the undergrowth. Third place went to me with a close-up shot of a beautiful Jenny Wren. He liked this shot mainly because it contained a high degree of detail in the bird’s feathering. Fourth place went to Jim Goddard with his mono rendition of ‘The Dealer’ and fifth went to Keith Perry with his shot ‘Banking at Sunset’.

After the break Lea judged his favourite photographic subjects, i.e. landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. This very wide subject gave him the difficult task of comparing many different styles including some creative versions. However, he finally held back seven entries. Andy White continuing his excellent season by being award top spot with his entry ’Pontoon’, an excellent yet simple shot. Second went to Graham Treharne with his entry ‘African Sunset’, another simple entry showing a single tree against a lovely sky. In third place was Martin Barber with his aerial shot of ‘Mount Titlis, Switzerland’. This was a highly detailed and unusual view of the alps taken while in flight no doubt. Jim Goddard popped up again taking fourth place with his view of the ‘London Shard’, a mono shot featuring it within a great city scape. It was nice to see Ian Barrow back in the top five, he has just missed out in recent months. Ian had obviously put a great deal of effort into his entry by travelling to Devon at the perfect moment to photograph the ‘The Daymark’ limestone beacon.
Having completed judging Lea informed members of his intentions to run a few workshops, Go to his website Lea Tippett's Website To check what he can offer!

Meeting Report 19th January 2021

Jane Lazenby BA(hons) Fine Art, QTFE(2), ASEA, LRPS, CPAGB, BPE3, AFIAP, LMPA. ‘Working with textures’

‘Oh what a night.’ Almost 40 members and paying guests enjoyed Jane Lazenby’s presentation and demonstration ‘Working With Textures’. I found Jane to be very inspiring and I hope you all feel the same. It would be great to see members having a go at this technique in future monthly competitions. From the start Jane came over as a dedicated artist and photographer who makes good use of her talent as an artist to create top quality images using textures to add effect and often cover up obtrusive areas in the image. Martin has already booked Jane to provide us with a further lecture, 'Inspired by Art', on October 21.

Meeting Report 12th January 2021

WCPF Audio Visual & Kingwood Salver Competitions Presentation

Martin welcomed members and explained how the evening would pan out, starting with the Kingswood Salver entries. He went on to remind us that this presentation was included in our programme to give us ideas that we can take on board for our own internal competitions coming up soon. Twenty-five WCPF clubs submitted entries this year which is about half the normal number of entries. Members debated and critiqued each entry then the completed panels, many of them receiving harsh criticism. Most panels did contained a few high quality images but only the top few had a full set. The first and second placed entries had three images that received highly commended or higher in the individual competition which was running alongside the Salver competition. With hindsight, I think our entry might have done OK despite feeling that it wasn’t up to the standard we had hoped to achieve. Many of our members now realise how difficult it was to put together a top class entry, particularly as Covid restrictions applied during the time when we needed to complete our entry.

After the break we took a look at the Audio Visual entries. Martin selected the top award winning entries to show us and a couple that he particularly liked. I was very impressed with many of them, some of which were very complex in the transition of images - clever stuff! I hope this gave you all the inspiration needed to have a good shot at producing your own entries for our meeting on March 23rd.

Meeting Report 5th January 2021

Steven Galvin didn’t disappoint in his presentation of Judge, Jury, and Executioner! He gave us an insight to his interests in photography which was wide and varied for sure, he certainly gets around a bit. I think most of the competition entry information pointers have been covered at some point in previous meetings but it doesn’t hurt us to take a fresh look at the basics required to be successful in competitions. In all, yet another very good evening via Zoom and to see and hear the techniques of a very accomplished photographer and judge who would not normally be available to us if we were holding our meetings as normal. I wouldn’t be surprised if Peter booked Stephen as a future monthly competition judge

Martin ran through future events that we can all look forward to in the coming weeks paying particular attention to our next professional lecturer Jane Lazenby “Working With Textures” tickets can be booked via the link in “future events”
