Meeting Report. Sara Harpley did a pretty good job of explaining how she arrived at her decisions in our monthly competition. The subjects were : Prints – “Open” and Digital – “After Dark”. Sara certainly made a couple of members very happy and we are all happy for them too.

Print “open” results: Well done Tom on taking the top spot with your image “Aces” originally created for our Kingswood Salver entry. It certainly had wonderful impact and deservedly took the top position. In second and third place was Andy with his creative take on a flamingo sleeping and his portrait entitled “Ivory Flame”. Joint fourth went to Martin B with his “In the name of sport” and yours truly with “Moroccan Ground Squirrel”. Six other images were held back which showed us all just how close the top places had been contested.

Digital “After Dark” results: For so long Jim has been knocking on the door and this month he came to the top with his creative entry “Corpse Bride”. Sara pointed out the total balance achieved when composing this image and his attention to detail gained him the top prize. Well done Jim! In second place was Peter’s super entry showing “Haytor” at night, well done Peter. In third was Keith’s image showing the Chinese dragon taken at the Longleat Christmas Festival, a lovely colourful shot. In joint fourth place: Andy White with his “After the Ball” and, once again, yours truly with my interpretation of “Dark Side of the Moon”.

Throughout the judging Sara did her best to be constructive without being offensive. All in all, another excellent monthly competition with a good number of entries. Martin wound things up by reminding members of the revised programme of events which is attached and posted on the club’s private FB page.

Next week (November 31st) we have our inter-club battle against Yeovil and Mid Somerset who are hosting the event. Please note this meeting starts earlier than normal. So log on from 7pm. The link for gaining access will be published on closed FB group

We hold our internal Members’ DPIC Competition on December 15th. Please prepare and upload up to 20 images which need to be fully focussed and have instant impact or originality to make it stand out. Meeting Report. Hugh Letheren certainly opened members’ eyes when he presented his lecture "Water drop photography". Hugh, from Cornwall, is obviously a very intelligent man. He described himself as a bit of a “techy” and explained in great detail what apparatus is required to achieve really complex, impressive, water drop photography. I hope you all got something from this presentation. Who knows what the future in this subject holds for us as there was talk of the club acquiring the equipment needed to obtain this type of image.

Next week (November 24th) It’s hard to believe, at least it is for me, that we have reached the half-way mark in our monthly competitions. Despite losing a few members and most of us not being able to travel very far, we have had some great entries from a good number of members. Thank you everyone, please keep the entries coming.
Next week our invited judge, Sara Harpley, is new to our club competitions. This can sometimes put us on dangerous ground, so let’s hope she does a fair job for us. The subjects are: Prints – “Open” and Digital – “After Dark”. I look forward to seeing what members have entered in the digital section as I think it is a new subject for us. November 5th Meeting Report

This week members had a chance to see a selection of the winning images from last year’s WCPF DPIC competition. It was great to see that a few of our members had images accepted into the final selection but sadly none of us made it into the individual members special awards this year. However, it was a club competition, and our club’s entry gained 18th place which is a very credible result as 58 clubs entered.
We are running our own version of this competition later this year and hope that you gained inspiration from seeing Tuesday’s presentation and it will help you select your entries which will all be considered for our next year’s club entry. Images can be on any subject but need to have high impact or originality to gain high scores because the judges are limited to just five seconds to assess your entry. I believe that Martin plans to move this event forward in our club’s programme of events to allow your entries to be included in our 2021 entry.

Next Week’s Meeting – November 12th Our old friend Ralph Snook is our invited speaker. He is a very accomplished photographer and judge and I’m sure it will be a very good evening looking and listening to his tips and methods of acquiring award winning images. Future Competitions & Events It’s still possible for members to have a trip to Tarr Steps and Exmoor as the weather forecast cast mainly good for the next week.
