Newsletter 30th January 2020

Hi BPS members

Meeting report January 28th

Yet another well supported monthly competition, thank you all for having a go! Jane Kearney had a very difficult challenge sorting out open prints and digital images based on Juxtaposition - two subjects that must have challenged her greatly. She obviously put in a great deal of time and effort into giving a fair critique on every single entry. Jane started by explaining how she decided that, because the print subject was Open, she would give technical input top priority when selecting her top five. Based on this, her first choice was awarded to Martin with his great print of Burnham Lighthouse ‘Into the blue’. I came second with my kingfisher ‘On the lookout’. In third place was Leigh Ann’s portrait of ‘Zoe’. Zoe looks a bit of a hippy with her guitar and headband. Graham Treharne was fourth with his super red squirrel shot ‘Airborne’. In fifth place was Andy White with his beautifully presented print ‘Window light’. There were also two Highly Commended Awards which were awarded to Peter Owen and myself. In the digital section, Jane pointed out once again the difficulty in pinning down what juxtaposition actually means. So she decided that all entries had some merit regarding juxtaposition whilst some demonstrated the subject clearly. First place was awarded to Peter with a great photographic capture an aircraft refueling exercise ‘Big Mamma and twins’. Martin took second place with his ‘Fire and Ice’ entry, and in third position was Andy White’s ‘Age gap’. Jane Billing secured fourth with ‘East meets West’ and fifth went Jim Goddard’s ‘Forest nymph’. Two Highly Commended Awards went to John Gamblin and Ken Hocking.
