Weekly Newsletter 30th November

Hi BPS members

Thank you, Ken and Peter, for assisting me putting together this newsletter, I’m sorry I couldn’t make the meeting due to a last minute family crisis!

Ken opened the meeting by introducing the guest judge for our monthly competition: Prints - Macro/Close Up and DI – Fantasy. The judge, David Southwell, congratulated us on the wealth of good photography on display and in general, he did a pretty decent job of critiquing/judging. His marking was controversial as he gave marks to the top three and two distinctions and offered constructive critique only to the rest which apparently is a growing trend amongst judges. I guess it’s a difficult job to sort 35/40 prints into some semblance of order of merit and no one is going to be happy with a score in single digits. Anyway, the first five received an appropriate score and the rest were awarded 15 points.

It soon became clear that, as a group, we are not too good at Macro/Close Up. The big problem was the struggle with depth of field leading to lack of sharpness/detail in the image. It was good to see Matt (our youngest full member) getting a well-deserved third place. The Fantasy DI competition was crammed with excellent ideas and again it was good to see Marcia gaining distinction for her effort in this category. It seems that with a bit more practice in execution, this genre could develop into another strong one for our club.

Print results; Peter 1st, Keith 2nd, Matt 3rd, Brian 4th, Ken 5th

Digital results; Andy 1st, Marcia 2nd, Peter 3rd, Matt 4th, and Alison 5th

You will notice that we have no set subject for our meeting to be held on December 18th. This is because we don’t usually meet after our Christmas get together leaving us with a very long break between meetings. The committee have decided to include a special meeting for members to discuss or receive tuition on any subject of their choice. Please let me know what you would like us to cover asap.

Next Meeting December 4th

We have a live Lecture - Andy Beel and his subject is ‘Me and my Eyes’. See link to his website https://www.andybeelfrps.co.uk/ If you have a family member, friend or workmate interested in coming along they will be welcome to join us and will need to pay £4 on the door.

This will be the last chance to pay Peter your balance for the Christmas meal to avoid the need for money to be collected on the night. I also need to finalise the number attending. It is not too late to add your name(s).

Future Club Events

Monday, December 3rd: Inter-club Three-way Battle at Yeovil. Those wishing to attend and would like to share transport please let me know so that I can compile a list.

December 8/9th Ragged Victorians/SS Great Britain trip to be arranged (weather dependent), on Saturday or Sunday or maybe on both days to suit members’ availability. This decision will be made nearer the time, check FB events soon.

Club Meeting: December 11th Christmas Meal at Harvest Moon 7 pm for 7.30.

Watch out for invites via our FB page to quite a few upcoming events.

Happy Snapping

Brian
